How to use it

Grade any page in three steps

  1. 1

    Enter a page

Paste the page you most want AI to recommend — a service page, product page or article — and press Grade my page.
  2. 2

We read it like a crawler

We read robots.txt for 15 AI crawlers, request the page as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, and parse the raw HTML exactly as most AI crawlers see it.
  3. 3

    Paste the fixes

Work down the “Fix these first” list, then copy the ready-made robots.txt rules, FAQPage and Organization schema and llms.txt starter.
What the grader checks

32 checks across seven areas

Each area is weighted by how much it affects whether an AI engine can find, trust and quote your page.
01

AI crawler access

robots.txt rules for 15 AI search, assistant and training crawlers, meta robots and X-Robots-Tag directives, and a live firewall test as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot.
02

Machine readability

How much of your content is in the raw HTML (most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript), app-shell detection, a main content landmark and the text-to-code ratio.
03

Structure & scannability

One clear H1, H2 sections, logical heading order, lists and tables, and paragraph length — the structure AI answers lift passages from.
04

Answer readiness

An answer-first opening paragraph, headings phrased as the questions people ask, and FAQPage, QAPage or HowTo structured data.
05

Structured data & entity

Valid JSON-LD, an Organization or LocalBusiness entity, sameAs links to your official profiles, page-type schema and Open Graph tags.
06

Trust & freshness

HTTPS, published and modified dates, an author or byline, and links to About and Contact pages that confirm who stands behind the content.
07

Technical discoverability

Title and meta description, a self-referencing canonical, language, XML sitemap, server response time and the optional llms.txt file.
08

Ready-made fixes

For anything missing we generate copy-paste robots.txt rules, FAQPage and Organization JSON-LD and an llms.txt starter built from your own page.
How AI answer engines work

From crawl to citation: the four gates

An AI engine has to pass every gate before it can recommend you. A failure at any one of them means you are left out of the answer.
01

Crawl

The engine’s crawler must be allowed by robots.txt and let through by your CDN or firewall. Blocked here, nothing else matters.
02

Read

The crawler reads the HTML it receives. Content that appears only after JavaScript runs is invisible to most AI crawlers.
03

Understand

Clear headings, answer-first paragraphs and schema tell the engine what the page is about and who is behind it.
04

Cite

Engines quote concise, specific, trustworthy passages from sources they recognise. Authority and brand mentions decide who gets recommended.

FAQ

AI Search Readiness Grader FAQ

Still curious? Ask our SEO team through the free audit form.
What is AI search readiness (AEO / GEO)?
AI search readiness describes how easily AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot can reach, read, understand and quote a page. Optimising for it is often called answer engine optimisation (AEO) or generative engine optimisation (GEO).
Why can’t ChatGPT or Perplexity see my website?
The most common reasons are a robots.txt rule that blocks crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, a CDN or firewall setting that blocks AI bots by default, and content that only appears after JavaScript runs — most AI crawlers read the raw HTML only. The grader tests all three.
Should I block GPTBot and other AI training crawlers?
It is a business decision. Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended or CCBot stops your content being used to train future models, but it also means those models learn less about your brand. Blocking the search and assistant crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot) removes you from AI answers entirely, which most businesses want to avoid.
Does Google AI Overviews use a separate crawler?
No. AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search and use the normal Googlebot crawl, so a page must be indexable and allowed to show snippets. The separate Google-Extended token controls whether content is used for Gemini models and grounding; Google says it does not affect inclusion in Search.
What is llms.txt and do I need one?
llms.txt is a proposed convention: a Markdown file at the root of your site that summarises it and lists the pages most useful to language models. It is optional — no major engine requires it yet — so the grader treats it as a bonus rather than a requirement, and generates a starter file for you.
Does a high score guarantee my site will be cited?
No. Readiness means engines can read and understand you; being recommended also depends on authority, relevance and how often trusted sources mention your brand. Our free detailed audit looks at both halves, including whether AI engines currently mention you for your buyers’ questions.
